Pakistan’s legacy media reflects the society’s patriarchal nature and religious majoritarianism through a predominantly male worldview in its coverage of public issues and often excludes inclusive perspectives. The online spaces allow better opportunities for women and religious minorities for public participation, but these openings are endangered by new threats, such as online abuse and hate campaigns. Freedom Network assists organized and sustained efforts necessary to promote affirmative and plural cultures in both legacy.
Gender audit of media development efforts
Freedom Network, first organization to have volunteered itself for gender audit, conducts gender and
pluralism audits of both its own media development programmes as well as the work of its media
partners to encourage diversity-friendly media practices.
Promoting diversity and pluralism in media
Freedom Network provides journalism support to independent online media organizations that seek to promote greater diversity of voices, especially the perspectives from marginalized communities and periphery regions, and quality news coverage of pressing issues of public interest, such as climate change and local governance.
